The British claim that similar puzzles were printed in the Times as early as the late 19th century. In South Africa, they claim that at the beginning of the 20th century, a man named Victor Orville, while serving a prison sentence, sent from prison to the editorial office of the Cape Town newspaper a puzzle, essentially similar to a crossword puzzle, which was published in the newspaper, gaining popularity among readers. It is worth noting that a crossword puzzle is drawn on Orville’s grave and an inscription is embossed, indirectly indicating that he is the inventor of the world-famous puzzle.
