Dozens of warehouse workers at two Amazon facilities near Chicago staged a “pre-Christmas” protest during the busiest time of the year to demand better treatment and higher wages. This comes shortly after six employees of the company were killed in the collapse of its warehouse in Illinois by a tornado.
“We are overwhelmed, even when there are enough people who can work here,” a DLN2 center official was quoted as saying. TechCrunch. “We did not receive the promised bonuses. There are people here who were hired as permanent workers and then their contracts were taken away and they were left as temporary workers. “
According to the employee, the place is dangerous and employees are required to work too fast. Morning shift workers (between 1:20 a.m. and 11:50 a.m.) also want a $ 5-hour raise.
Before going outside, the workers presented a petition to management listing their demands. According to the employees, there is no answer from the management – which is the reason for their symbolic exit from the warehouses.
A spokesman for the protesters said workers had been told by management that anyone who took part in the “walk” could then “leave their service badge”, meaning they would not be returned to work. Returning from the symbolic exit, the workers found that their schedules were empty and were off for the day.
“We respect the right of employees to protest and recognize their legal right to do so. We are proud to offer employees leading pay, competitive advantage and the opportunity to grow with our company, ”said an Amazon spokesman.
