According to the expert, red caviar can be roughly divided into two types: from fish grown artificially (trout), and from wild fish (pink salmon or sockeye salmon). Moreover, the difference in price between them can be even one thousand hryvnia. Kulikova clarified that a kilogram of high-quality trout caviar can cost 1400 hryvnia (a can of 80 grams – 112 hryvnia), and pink salmon – 2000 and 160 hryvnia, respectively.

“If the caviar is within these limits, then, by and large, this is normal. It is not worth buying very cheap,” the expert advises and adds that it is also important to pay attention to the shelf life of caviar, given the spawning period of salmonids.
“Salmon spawning occurs from July to September, and if the jar has a production date within this period, we understand that the caviar is fresh,” Kulikova explained.
She also said that caviar made from frozen raw materials can be of high quality, and when buying, she advised avoiding a product with a preservative urotropin in its composition.
