Memorable dates 26 December, anniversaries and events
On December 26, 1783, the parachute was presented. The story is as follows: in 1783, the French physicist Louis Sebastian Lenormand improved the Faust Vernaccio’s parachute, known for more than a hundred years, making it not only more reliable, but also more beautiful. Lenormand’s parachute was a rigid cone-shaped dome, sewn from linen and pasted over from the inside with paper to reduce air permeability, with slings descending from the perimeter, which were attached to a seat woven from willow rods. On December 26, 1783, Lenormand jumped from the roof of a house in Paris. The jump was successful. Encouraged by his success, he jumped a second time from the spire of the observatory in Molpellier.

On June 3, 1785, he rose from the Champ de Mars in Paris in a hot air balloon and parachuted a dog from it. The dog sank to the ground unharmed. The beginning of the use of a parachute to save human life was laid by the French aeronaut Garnerin. On October 22, 1797, he took off in a hot air balloon in the Parc Monceau. Reaching an altitude of 700 meters, he cut the rope connecting his parachute and a basket with a balloon. The balloon exploded, and the parachute, under which Garnerin was hanging, began to descend quickly. Sinking into the field, Garnerin mounted his horse and returned to the Parc Monceau, where he was greeted by a jubilant audience. Garnerin jumped several more times on his primitive parachute, then taught this art to his loved ones. For example, his niece Elizaveta Garnerin made about 40 parachute jumps and became the world’s first parachutist.
In 1898, French chemists Pierre and Marie Curie discovered that the waste left over after separating uranium from uranium ore (uranium tar mined in the Czech city of Joachimstal) was more radioactive than pure uranium. From this waste, the Curies, after several years of intensive work, isolated two highly radioactive elements: polonium and radium. On December 26, 1898, Curie made the first report on the discovery of radium at the French Academy of Sciences.
In 1902, Curie and André Debierne isolated pure radium by electrolysis of radium chloride on a mercury cathode and subsequent distillation in hydrogen. The isolated element was the isotope radium-226, a decay product of uranium-238. The Curies received the Nobel Prize for their discovery of radium and polonium. It took a lot of work to get pure radium in the early 20th century. Marie Curie worked for 12 years to get a grain of pure radium. To obtain just 1 gram of pure radium, several wagons of uranium ore, 100 wagons of coal, 100 wagons of water and 5 wagons of various chemicals were needed.
