The Council of Europe expressed regret and sadness over the liquidation of the International Memorial.

Russia continues to move away from common European values in connection with the liquidation of the International Memorial organization.
This is stated in the released statement of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maria Pejcinovic-Buric, reports “European truth“.
“The liquidation of the International Memorial is devastating news for civil society in the Russian Federation. The existence and development of civil society organizations is an important pillar of any European democracy.
She noted that the Russian authorities ignored repeated calls by the Council of Europe to revise the “Law on Foreign Agents” and rejected a proposal to revise the legislation in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights.
“This is very sad. We continue to offer our help and experience, but today is a dark day for civil society in the Russian Federation,” said Peichinovich-Buric.
On December 28, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to liquidate the International Memorial organization, which specializes in researching political repression in the Soviet Union.

The prosecutor’s office, which filed a petition for liquidation, explained that International Memorial allegedly repeatedly violated the requirements of the law on “foreign agents.”
At the final meeting, a representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office said that the organization “creates a false image of the USSR as a terrorist state, whitens and rehabilitates Nazi criminals.”
There is also the Memorial Human Rights Center in Russia (foreign agent since 2014). The issue of its liquidation is now also being considered in court.
