The World Blitz and Rapid Chess Championship was held in Warsaw. Ukraine also had its representation at these competitions.
19-year-old Kievite Kirill Shevchenko played in one of the games against 23-year-old Muscovite David Paravyan.
In the endgame of the fight, David got into time trouble (lack of time), which was quite a shame for him, because he had a winning position. Paravyan wanted to put a second queen instead of a pawn (this is allowed by the rules), but there was no spare piece nearby. He stopped the clock and waited for the queen to be handed over to him.
When he started the countdown again, a second later the time was up, which was not enough anyway. David got angry and threw the pieces out of his emotions. But he instantly smiled and politely shook hands with his opponent – Shevchenko, who won.
Recently the men’s national team of Ukraine won the European Team Chess Championship and then Kirill Shevchenko was in the “yellow-blue” team.
Also at this World Cup, the Polish grandmaster Pavel Tetslaf, after his unsuccessful move, was disappointed and curiously fell off his chair.
