Analysts from Counterpoint Research determined the fastest growing brand on the market for Android smartphones from the fifth generation (5G) through the third quarter of 2021. It turned out to be the Chinese brand Really.
Sales of Realme 5G smartphones in July-September rose 831% year on year. In comparison, the market as a whole grew by 121% during the same period.
Experts note that for the second consecutive quarter, Realme is in sixth place in the ranking of leading suppliers of 5G smartphones based on Android. Along with Realme, among the fastest growing Android brands in the 5G segment are Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Samsung.
Compared to last year’s data, sales of 5G models from the listed brands increased by 165%, 147%, 134% and 70%, respectively. Commenting on the data, Tarun Patak, director of counterpoint research for the smartphone market notesthat the adoption of 5G is advancing much faster than previous technologies.
“We are entering the next phase of growth, led by an expanding and more mature product portfolio. OEMs are adding 5G support to devices at different price points and expanding the geography of their sales, which increases the availability of the technology, ”says Patak.
In addition, he said, companies have become more active in promoting 5G models due to the better situation with the availability of components for them. Vendors with a more mature portfolio of 5G products have been able to take advantage of the growing demand for mid-range devices.
“With a strong multi-channel strategy and a wide range of 5G smartphones in all price ranges, the Realme brand has achieved the highest growth rates… Apple remains the market leader, entering 5G smartphones only in the fourth quarter of 2020,” said Patak.
The rapid spread of 5G smartphones was noticed earlier by the Taiwanese research organization Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC). According to her forecast, 5G smartphones should overtake 4G models in 2022, occupying 53.7% of the market. Experts from Strategy Analytics believe that this could happen even earlier – in the last quarter of 2021.
Strategy Analytics also estimates that in the third quarter of 2021, revenue in the global 5G smartphone market tripled, and shipments of devices with support for fifth-generation networks more than doubled last year.
While Apple is incomparable in terms of both supply and revenue from 5G smartphones, experts note the success of Chinese brands. In July-September, Chinese suppliers accounted for 56% of the total number of 5G devices launched, and their contribution to revenue was 31%.
