Parents’ Saturday is the day when Christians commemorate their departed relatives and friends. In total, there are 8 such days during the year: two are Ecumenical, that is, for the commemoration of all; three – during Lent, and three – private.
When is the next parental Saturday and all other memorial days
All memorial Saturdays, except for one (May 9), have movable dates.
In 2022, parental funeral Saturdays fell on 26 february (Meat Saturday) 19 and 26 March, April 2 (memorial Saturdays of Great Lent), May 3 (Radonitsa) and May 9, June 11 (Trinity Saturday) and November 5 (Dimitrievskaya Saturday).
The people also celebrate Pokrovskaya parental Saturday (in 2022 it takes place on October 8) and Mikhailovskaya parental Saturday (in 2022 – November 19), but there are no such memorial days in the Orthodox calendar – this is an exclusively folk tradition.
Parent’s Saturday: How to Remember and When to Go to Temple
The main thing to do on parental Saturday is to pray for the soul of the deceased. Priests call for this to go to church for the funeral liturgy or even order a panikhida. But you can read the prayer at home:

In churches, funeral services often begin on Friday evening. But the main commemoration is still performed on Saturday morning – at the liturgy.
The memorial dinner is not regulated by the canons of the church (you can serve any dish with an eye to whether it is fast or not), the main thing is moderation.
Why is food brought to the temple on parental Saturday?
This tradition goes back to the times when memorial meals were shared. In ours, this tradition is a kind of sacrifice to the clergy.
It is advisable to choose products “for the sake of the soul” for long-term storage (vegetable oil, flour, cereals, and so on). It is undesirable to carry meat products and alcohol. You can substitute a donation for food.
Do I need to go to the cemetery on parental Saturday
If the choice is between going to church and going to the grave (for example, there is not enough time for both), then the priests insist on going to church.
But after praying in the church, you can go to pray at the cemetery. Above the grave, they read the 17th kathisma Psalter or litiya, you can order a panikhida from the priest.
