The US called on Russia to stop all military operations at or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities and return full control to Ukraine.
The United States supported the initiative to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
How informs Reuters, this was stated by the representative of the US State Department.
“Fighting near the nuclear plant is dangerous and irresponsible, and we continue to call on Russia to stop all military operations at or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities and return full control to Ukraine. We also support Ukraine’s calls for a demilitarized zone around the nuclear power plant,” a State Department spokesman said.
As UNIAN reported, today, August 11, the invaders again fired at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and the territory near the nuclear facility.
Before that, on August 5, the invaders fired at the nuclear power plant four times. In particular, they hit a high-voltage communication line, it was damaged, emergency protection went off at one of the power units.
Also, three “arrivals” were recorded right at the station site, near one of the power units where the nuclear reactor is located. The nitrogen-oxygen station and the combined auxiliary building were seriously damaged. Risks of hydrogen leakage and radioactive spraying have been reported, as well as a high fire hazard.
On August 6, the invaders hit the site of the Zaporizhzhya NPP directly next to the spent nuclear fuel storage facility.
Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed serious concern about the shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, saying that it increases the risk of a nuclear catastrophe. He called on all parties to the conflict to exercise maximum restraint near the nuclear site.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for the International Atomic Energy Agency to have access to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant “to provide technical support for nuclear safety.”
