Our country must receive such a number of these air defense systems to cover the entire territory.
NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems will be able to strengthen the air defense of Ukraine, but there is a nuance. Our country needs enough systems to cover the entire territory. Only then will it be possible to talk about significant changes in protection.
This statement was made by the speaker of the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yuriy Ignat in a comment “RBC-Ukraine”.
“NASAMS could strengthen the existing air defense system, but we can talk about materiality only when there are enough of these complexes, batteries, and so on, which can be dispersed throughout the country, covering both large cities and important government facilities,” Ignat said.
The speaker of the Air Force noted that Ukraine is unlikely to receive such a number of air defense systems in the near future. Partners will send them gradually, not “all at once”.
“This is only the first step in providing Ukraine with modern anti-aircraft systems that we will have in service, and then, along the” trodden path, “we will probably update the air defense echelon,” Ignat added.
The representative of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine also noted that NASAMS has a small radius of action – up to 40 kilometers. However, this anti-aircraft missile system has other advantages. These include speed, mobility and “powerful maneuvering missiles.” The latter are capable of shooting down projectiles fired from operational-tactical complexes.
Recall, on September 16, the US Department of Defense announced that two NASAMS batteries would be sent to Ukraine over the next two months. And at the end of August, information appeared about the Pentagon’s contract for the purchase of the mentioned air defense systems in the amount of $180 million. Systems are purchased for transfer to our country.
