Tesla CEO Elon Musk blamed excessive robotization for sending the electric car company into “production hell” four years ago. Then he said that humans are better at certain tasks. But maybe it’s different now.
Musk’s company has ambitious plans to deploy thousands of humanoid robots, known as the Tesla Bot or Optimus, in its factories. He expects that after the appearance of the robots in the factories, these new machines will go all over the world, in homes, offices, hospitals, restaurants.
Even within the company itself, there is tension now, as internal meetings on the subject of robots abound, and employees inevitably face the hidden message – they could lose their jobs to robots.
Musk talks like a dreamer. He says robots will be able to be used in homes, cook dinner, mow the lawn and care for the elderly, even become human “friends” and why not boyfriends.
On its “Artificial Intelligence Day” on September 30, Tesla should drop the bombshell – unveiling the Optimus prototype. During this time, the entire IT industry was torn between enthusiasm and skepticism.
Some believe the firm will show technological advances that would justify the expense of “general purpose” robots in factories, homes and elsewhere. Others say that after the athletic performances of robots like Boston Dynamics’, Tesla’s machines will need to have much more substantial skills to make an impression — much more than walking, dancing and somersaulting.
“Self-driving cars have actually not turned out to be as easy as many thought. It’s the same with humanoid robots to some extent,” NASA Dexterous Robotics Team leader Sean Azimi told Reuters.
Others recall that at the Autonomy event in 2019, Musk promised 1 million robotaxis by 2020. Well, we’re still waiting for Tesla’s robotaxis.
Some point out that there was similar skepticism about Musk’s project for a new generation of spacecraft, but SpaceX is a fact and the company’s rockets are performing excellently.
Public expectations are heated and there is hardly a person who is indifferent to the upcoming announcement. Meanwhile, Tesla manages to keep completely silent and not release anything before the coveted date.
