Renowned and Oscar-winning visual effects company Pixomondo, with studios in the US and Europe, relies on AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO-based Lenovo P620 workstations to produce real-time video effects for the TV series Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The hardware and software demands of creating virtual worlds are enormous. Pixomondo recently made a shift from traditional visual effects to real-time virtual production.

The company had to rethink its technology to meet the demands of real-time production, which required a large number of computing cores and significant system throughput.

In partnership with Epic Games, a video game and software developer, and using Lenovo P620 workstations with AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO processors, Pixomondo got the performance it needed to create complex, realistic environments for the Star Trek: Discovery series in real time.

This, for example, includes the creation of virtual environments such as the Moonlit Mausoleum, a 2 km deep cave with complex geometry.

“To create truly immersive worlds, it takes a lot of computing going on in the background. Products like AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO allow this to happen in a way that allows our creators to do their work without having to worry about the technology,” said Miles Perkins, Epic Games Film & TV Manager.
