Serbia and Kosovo agree plan to normalize relations – Borrell

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Prime Minister of the partially recognized Kosovo Albin Kurti have agreed on an agreement to normalize relations between the countries. This happened during the negotiations that took place in North Macedonia.

“Kosovo and Serbia have agreed on an implementation annex to the Agreement on the way to normalization of relations,” Borrell wrote in Twitter.

According to him, the countries are fully committed to comply with all articles of the agreement and to fulfill the relevant obligations promptly and in good faith.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. This fact was recognized by 97 out of 193 UN member states and 22 out of 27 EU member states. At the same time, Ukraine has not recognized the independence of Kosovo and considers this region to be part of Serbia.

In the summer of 2022, there were clashes on the border between Kosovo and Serbia, and shots were also heard. It was noted that the reason for this was the new rules of travel in Kosovo. Then the decision to implement the new rules was delayed for 1 month.

In December, relations between Kosovo and Serbia deteriorated again. The Kosovo authorities blocked the main crossing on the border with Serbia after protesters blocked traffic on this road on the Serbian side.
