The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine believes that the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission resorted to unacceptable actions when it decided to equate Ukraine as a victim with Russia, which is an aggressor.

As stated in the statement of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine took into account the reports prepared by the UN monitoring mission in Ukraine, namely the regular report on the human rights situation in Ukraine and the report on the treatment of prisoners of war.

“We are grateful to the monitoring mission for its work, in particular, documenting violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation in the context of armed aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, we consider it unacceptable to lay responsibility on the victim of aggression. According to the UN Charter, Ukraine has the right to self-defence,” the statement said.

“As the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly emphasized, the Ukrainian side expects that the UN mission will avoid any steps that can be interpreted as equalizing the victim and the aggressor,” the Foreign Ministry added.

UN POW Report – Details

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine presented two new reports – on the treatment of prisoners of war and the general situation with human rights in Ukraine for six months before January 31 this year. The UN mission argued about possible violations of the rights of Russian prisoners of war by the Ukrainian side.

At the same time, the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights, Dmitry Lubinets, expressed surprise that the representatives of the United Nations never spoke about possible violations of the rights of Russian prisoners in Ukraine during personal meetings.
