The National Bank issued commemorative medals dedicated to two Ukrainian cities (photo)
The medals are dedicated to the feat and perseverance of the inhabitants of Chernigov and Nikolaev.

The National Bank issued two commemorative medals – “City of Heroes – Chernihiv” and “City of Heroes – Nikolaev”.
According to the press service of the regulator, the commemorative medal “City of Heroes – Nikolaev” is dedicated to “the feat and resilience of the inhabitants of the city of ships, which has become a real fortress on the path of Russian invaders in southern Ukraine.”
On the obverse of the medal there are the inscriptions 2023/UKRAINE, the small State Emblem of Ukraine, lines from the poetry of Lina Kostenko, as well as a stylized composition that emphasizes that Nikolaev is a shipbuilding city and a seaport.

On the reverse of the medal, on a mirror background, there is an inscription – MIKOLAYV/MISTO HEROЇV, dividing the field of the medal in two: in the upper part there is a mirror composition symbolizing resistance to the Russian occupier, despite significant destruction, in the lower part there is a stylized panorama of the city with its historical and archaeological monuments.

The commemorative medal “City of Heroes – Chernihiv” is dedicated to the feat, mass heroism and resilience of the citizens of the city, which from the first hours of the Russian invasion of Ukraine was under round-the-clock shelling.
On the obverse of the medal there are inscriptions – 2023/UKRAINE, the small State Emblem of Ukraine, in the center – lines from the poetry of Lina Kostenko and a stylized composition of the city’s historical religious buildings.
On the reverse of the medal, on a mirror background, there is an inscription – CHERNIGIV/MISTO HEROIV, dividing the field of the medal in two: in the upper part – a mirror composition, symbolizing resistance to Russian invaders, despite the destruction; at the bottom – a stylized panorama of the city with its historical buildings.
Commemorative medals are made of nickel silver, the circulation of both is up to 100 thousand pieces.
War in Ukraine and commemorative coins
On July 11, 2022, the NBU issued new coins dedicated to the war with Russia.
On July 25, the NBU launched commemorative coins of the “Armed Forces of Ukraine” series into circulation. At that time, the series, launched in 2018, already consisted of 14 coins.
In November 2022, the National Bank put into circulation a set of three commemorative coins “State Symbols of Ukraine” – “Our Coat of Arms”, “Our Flag”, “Our Anthem”. The coin “Garden of Divine Songs” and the commemorative medal “City of Heroes – Kharkov” were also introduced.
On December 14, 2022, the National Bank of Ukraine announced that it was putting into circulation a commemorative coin “Archangel Michael”.
On January 23, 2023, Ukrainian commemorative coins are recognized as one of the best in the world.
