The authors of Horizon Forbidden West responded to the “homophobic” reaction about the orientation of Aloy
The developers were advised to ignore people who don’t like Aloy’s sexual preferences.
After the release of the Burning Shores add-on for Horizon Forbidden West, it was revealed that Aloy is part of the LGBTQ community. In addition, the ability to kiss a girl is implemented. Users can choose to opt out, but each of the responses confirms the girl’s sexual orientation. Some players did not like this approach of the developers from Guerrilla Games, and they bombarded Burning Shores with negative reviews on Metacritic. And recently, the developers have responded to, in their opinion, the “homophobic” reaction of individual users.
In an interview with VGC, Guerrilla Games Narrative Director Ben McCaw stated: “We love it when (fans) have constructive feedback about this or that. And we’re perfectly happy when they say they don’t like this or that about almost every aspect of the game. that they really thought about. But when there’s just pure negativity, it’s pretty easy for me personally to separate and realize that I can never come to terms with that kind of thinking.”
McCaw’s words were supplemented by lead writer Annie Chinan. According to her, Aloy’s feelings for Seika are “still right”, and the choice in the kissing episode depends on the opinion of each user about the readiness of the main character for a relationship. However, each decision is “justified” and fits into the plot concept. As for the “homophobic” reaction, Chinan said that this part of the audience is “pretty easy to ignore.”
