How to treat roses without “chemistry”: folk remedies for aphids, rust and other misfortunes
How to spray roses from pests and diseases without the use of chemicals – advice from experienced gardeners.
As soon as the rose season approaches, problems begin: either aphids, then powdery mildew, then scale insects. Do not rush to run to the store for another remedy to deal with troubles – especially since many pests and diseases have already developed immunity to them. Try to use folk remedies – we tell you how to spray roses from pests and diseases.
The first rule for rose lovers is to regularly inspect the bushes for pests or signs of disease. After all, it is much easier to deal with them at the initial stage. If suddenly you find aphid colonies, weevils, powdery mildew, rust on the flowers, get down to business. By the way, these folk remedies can also be used for prevention.
Powdery mildew on roses – how to deal with
What powdery mildew looks like on roses: white bloom on leaves, shoots and buds. Help get rid of it:
- Mullein and wood ash
Dilute 1 kg of mullein in 10 liters of water, add 200 g of ash, leave for a week in a warm place, strain. Dilute the infusion in a ratio of 1:10 and spray the leaves. Repeat after 3-4 days.
Dilute 1 tbsp. l. baking soda and 1/2 tsp. laundry soap in 4 liters of warm water and spray the roses. Repeat 1-2 more times in a week.
Dilute the serum with water in a ratio of 1:10. Spray the bushes 3 times every 3 days.
Grind 300 g of garlic, pour 10 liters of water, leave for a day, strain. Spray bushes 1-2 times.
Dilute 3 g of potassium permanganate in 10 liters of water, spray the roses and water them.
Rust on roses – how to treat
Rust is very insidious, as it spreads fairly quickly throughout the site. Therefore, if you find it, act immediately.
What rust looks like: yellow or orange powder spots on leaves, petioles, stems, buds.
How to treat roses for rust:
- Milk infusion
This plant contains poisonous milky juice. Grind 1.5 kg of milkweed and pour 10 liters of warm water, let it brew for a day. Spray roses 1-2 times.
- Copper soap solution
Dissolve 300 g of laundry soap in 9 liters of soft water. Dilute 30 g of copper sulphate in 1 liter of hot water and pour in a thin stream into the soapy solution, mix. Cool to 20-25°C and spray roses.
Important: this solution should not be used if flakes have precipitated in it.
Black spot on roses – control measures
What does black spot look like: rounded purple-brown spots that turn black over time, and the leaves curl and fall off.
Dilute the mullein with water in a ratio of 1:20, leave for 2 days and spray the roses. Do this procedure once a week until the bush recovers.
- Infusion of garlic
Grind 500 g of garlic, pour 5 liters of warm water. After an hour, drain the water into a separate container, and pour the garlic again with 1 liter of clean water. After an hour, combine both solutions, add another 4 liters of water. For spraying, dilute 1.5 cups of the finished infusion in 10 liters of water.
Used to prevent black spotting: dilute 5 ml of iodine in 2 liters of water and spray roses.
How to spray roses from aphids, spider mites, scale insects and other pests
Among pests, rose lovers are considered to be aphids, spider mites, scale insects, rose leafworms, thrips, and slobbering pennitsa. Such folk remedies will help to cope with them:
- Laundry soap
4-5 art. l. dilute soap shavings in 1 liter of warm water, spray roses.
Dilute 300-400 g of ash in 10 liters of water, put on fire and cook for 2 hours. Cool and spray the bushes.
- Red pepper
Chop 200 g of dried or 600 g of fresh red pepper and pour 2 liters of water. Boil for 1 hour, and then let it brew for 2 days. Strain, dilute 1 liter of the finished broth in 10 liters of water, add 40 g of laundry soap and spray the bushes.
Grind 2-3 medium onions, together with the husk, pour 10 liters of water and leave for a day. Strain, add 30 g of crushed laundry soap and spray the bushes.
Grind 200 g of garlic, together with the husk, add 1 liter of water and insist for 5 days in a warm place. Dilute 100 ml of infusion in 5 liters of water and moisten the areas of roses affected by pests.
150 g of wormwood pour 5 liters of water and leave for 14 days. Dilute with water in a ratio of 1:10, spray the flowers.
Treat roses – both for diseases and pests – in dry cloudy weather. Spraying should be repeated after rain. If one treatment is not enough, repeat again, but it is better to alternate the funds.
