Over the past month, search teams have found 50 bodies of people who were considered missing in the liberated settlements in the Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkiv regions, Oleg Kotenko, the Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, said.

“Exclusive footage was provided by the commander of the search groups in the Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkiv regions, Aleksey Yukov. The footage was taken in the de-occupied territories while working out the locations of possible burials. Last month alone, the search engines managed to recover fifty bodies,” Kotenko wrote and published a series of photographs from the search works.

Missing during the war – what you need to know

In early May, the Unified Register of Missing Persons was launched in Ukraine, which will collect data on the missing.

On May 4, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that 101,543 facts regarding missing citizens had been registered since the beginning of the war. More than 23 thousand people who disappeared under special circumstances remain wanted.

Among those wanted is UNIAN correspondent Dmitry Khilyuk, kidnapped by invaders. He was abducted on March 3, 2022 in the Kyiv region. Vasily, the father of the journalist, was released by the invaders, and Dmitry himself was taken to Russia. The invaders deny the kidnapping of Dmitry Khilyuk. The only news from him during this time is a letter written in April 2022.

Oleg Kotenko, Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, also reported that the Commissioner’s office was looking for 7,000 people.
